The main goal of the Munningen bypass was to redirect regional traffic, a large portion of which is heavy goods vehicle traffic, away from the town centre. A particular challenge was created through the presence of scattered subareas of the European bird conservation site »Nördlinger Ries and Wörnitztal« surrounding the project area.

For two birds of prey, the marsh harrier and Montagu's harrier, the "Nördlinger Ries and Wörnitztal" site is of national importance. Consequently, the environmental design focused on reducing the impact of the bypass on these two bird species.
